Local Restaurants & Places to Eat around Taunton

Wildwood

The Market House, Fore St, Taunton TA1 1JD, UK – 01823 217000

I had lunch with my husband here, it was a fairly simple salad and a burger so nothing special but it was very nice, the service was good, the place was clean and it was overall an enjoyable lunch. For my son's birthday he wanted to go here to eat something specific from their menu however I was unable to take him, I emailed the restaurant and they very kindly responded with the list of ingredients needed to make the meal myself and I had a very happy boy! Top marks to the staff for service both in house and on line!

Good restaurant with friendly staff. The backed brie and the wild mushroom risotto are good vegetarian options.

Castle Bow Restaurant

Castle Bow, Taunton TA1 1NF, UK – 01823 328328

Sadly the restaurant didn't have our booking, which was made several months in advance given that it was for a 60th birthday celebration, the excellent reputation of the restaurant and the time of year. Wine was very disappointing, very expensive, for supermarket quality products. Food wasn't very hot, however it was amazing. Service was lacking, more attention being paid to hotel guests, had to pour our own wine a couple of times, which shouldn't be the case in a restaurant of this calibre.

Really good cream tea! Nice and cosy place!

Bill's Taunton Restaurant

3-6 Cheapside, Taunton TA1 3LG, UK – 01823 276663

Great food and very attentive staff. So why only 4 stars? When the bill (pardon the pun) arrived they'd already added a 10% service charge!! I've heard of this happening for large groups in some places but in this instance there were only 4 of us and the restaurant was almost empty. So, although described as optional, you actually have to opt out of giving a tip which feels very rude when the waiter is standing right in front of you. Very underhand and, for this reason only, it will be a long time before I visit another Bill's restaurant. You have been warned!!

Not great at breakfast. Porridge dry and served at same time as toast with coffee coming before the porridge so that was drunk before toast and toast was cold by time I ate that. A bit of thought would have improved experience. Serve hot drink with the food and if toast being served then after the other food ordered.
